Vegetable, fruit and herb prices have generally increased last week. Notable increases for cauliflower, up 1.00 to 2.92, courgettes up 1.45 to 5.56, green beans up 2.18 to 8.69
Kiwifruit available from around 1.95 down about 2.00
Limes down 1.30 to 4.87
Broccoli available from 1.25, down 1.50
Red capsicum 5.90, up around 1.00
Annual movements
Statistics NZ reported that food prices increased 6.0 percent in the year to March 2008, following increases of 5.2 percent
and 4.4 percent in the years to February and January 2008, respectively.
The most significant upward contribution came from the grocery food subgroup (up 9.0 percent).
The following subgroups also recorded increases: restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food
(up 4.7 percent), non-alcoholic beverages (up 7.1 percent), meat, poultry and fish (up 2.7
percent), and fruit and vegetables (up 2.9 percent).
Within these subgroups, the most significant upward contributions came from higher prices
for cheese (up 44.2 percent), fresh milk (up 21.7 percent), ready to eat food (up 5.8), bread
(up 12.2 percent), butter (up 82.2 percent), and soft drinks (up 8.6 percent).
The most significant downward contributions came from lower prices for oranges (down 28.6
percent), and avocados (down 44.2 percent).
