It appears more people in NZ are choosing to stay in rather than brave the economic storm by dining out. While restaurant sales dropped by 3%, movie hire and the hire of home appliances (presumably DVD players) rose by 20% between December and February. Sales of wine and specialty meats and cheeses have also risen slightly.

According to the Restaurant Association, the lunch market seems to be the worst affected, with the high-end dinner trade not yet suffering.
